Deep Welds, 2015 grew out of Michael Stickrod clearing his father’s garage after his death in 2014. The space was filled with tools, unfinished projects, objects, materials, magazines, and things they had made separately and together over decades. Going through it felt like excavating a family history. At the same time, Stickrod had become interested in Dogon objects and ideas about communication with ancestors. The sculpture in Deep Welds developed from these overlapping histories, treating the garage and its contents as a kind of personal archive through which memories, family mythology, and conversations with his parents could continue. The exhibition also included the release of the 7-inch record Hard Drives for Days, produced through COR&P.
